You are required to produce a detailed presentation of one of the investigations you
have carried.
Energy conversion (Electric to heat)
Aim: To see how much energy is needed to heat to boiling point 113,8 ml of water
Abstract:
In this experiment, i tried calculating and getting to know how much energy can be
transfered in the action of heating the water, also seeing how much heat capacity the water
was capable of, the experiment was done in a way where the water was in constant track, to
get specific calculation, so we could find out in the calculations done later the values of it and
how energy conversion, works.
Introduction:
Electrical energy is a form of energy that occurs as a result of either stored or moving
charged particles. When the energy is stored it is called electric potential energy and when it
is moving in an electric current it is a form of kinetic energy. Our most common form of
electrical energy is found in our wall outlets. Thermal energy is energy that results from
moving atoms or molecules and is commonly referred to as heat. The faster the atoms or
molecules move, the more heat or thermal energy they have.
In my case we used this method to see how quick The water boiled.
Materials:
The method:
1. Set up electrical circuit providing the electric energy
2. put a known ( measured mass) amount of liquid (e.g.h20) into a calorimeter
3. take the temperature T of the liquid prior to heating it
4. switch on the power to the electrical circuit
5. measure the time t, buy a stopwatch, that the circuit is hitting the liquid
6. measure the current and I and voltage V across the filament/ heater using the
amateur/ voltmeter
7. take the temperature at a desired high value ( 90 degrees C)
8. record the time and the temperature reach in that time
9. continue hitting the liquid until it boils while measuring the time it takes
10. observe the liquid while it's boiling ( 100° C, for H2O) and converting the
Vapour( change of phase)
11. continue to measuring it's temperature t looking out for any temperature rise
12. question does the temperature rise while the liquid is boiling and converting to
vapour? no, the temperature does not change when it reaches the boiling point
because the started to vaporize.
13. after a certain time, when the conversion is continuing, stop
14. final measurements of all readings( T, t, mas, v, i)
15. calculate the electrical power provided
16. calculate heat energy produced.
