Introduction to health and social policy
Homework

In my opinion, welfare states still protect cradle to grave because of the support that they
provide. For example, people can claim benefits if they need extra support for any number of
reasons and support with education is provided by state schools for those who cannot afford
private schools or scholarships/bursaries for those who cannot afford private schools. Although
there are many benefits to the welfare state, there are also some disadvantages. For example,
people who bought council housing were unable to afford the additional costs associated with
maintaining the house, and the support that was provided had some disadvantages as well.

Beveridge's five giants have been defeated to a certain degree due to being supported with
housing, finding a good education, finding and gaining suitable employment along with
increasing health and reducing poverty. However, there are still issues in society that are
preventing the five giants from being defeated further.

The areas I believe that have made the most progress have been education and health due to
policies being implemented that have brought improvements to health and decreased illness or
made the public more aware of diseases and illnesses, another area is education because of
policies allowing children of all backgrounds and various skills to have an education to help
progress them further. But areas where I have made the least progress are poverty and
housing, especially now as the cost of living crisis has impacted people's ability to afford
housing or prevent poverty.

Debating universalism versus selectivity

Child benefits should be selective due to not everyone needs to seek or claim benefits such as
a person who is well off doesn't necessarily need to claim child benefits. Another reason could
be the resources could be wasted or people could fall through the cracks if universalism is
applied to child benefit.

, model of welfare

welfare state is there to provide support those the public, specifically to those who need it the
most. Furthermore, the welfare state provides support both in the long and short term of
improving the public’s health.

the welfare state is funded through national insurance numbers in the UK and in the US social
security number.

The neo-liberalism (USA) model has advantages such as people being in control of their
support and not having to completely rely on the government, however, the model doesn’t
support everyone in society which can be a disadvantage.

In the social market economy (Germany) there are many more advantages to these models
such as providing support for everyone to better themselves and others in society and giving
extra support to those who need it. There are limited disadvantages to this model such as …..

Sweden's model (Sweden) supported everyone in society with great benefits for society
however the taxes were high to maintain the higher benefits. But the model was able to reduce
poverty until 2018.

The challenges to the UK welfare state are providing support to those who need it at a required
standard, keeping up with the changes in society, and providing enough support to those who
are most valuable such as the ageing population, and migrants.

introduction to the NHS

The NHS was first established in 1911, and only available for the working class.

The NHS is made up of several different organisations.

The Beveridge report

help the government in developing a welfare state that would be available for everyone.
Furthermore, the Beveridge report took a comprehensive approach to developing a welfare
state and looking at state intervention instead of relying on individuals such as the NHS.

The NHS took a radical reform in improving their approach to the public‘s health such as
improvements in interventions and quality of care.

Over the next five to ten years, the NHS could face challenges relating to the balance between
how much control the government has versus how much control the NHS has regarding pay
and staff well-being. Long waiting lists, for example, could negatively impact public health and
quality of care. Covid 19 has affected a lot of NHS decisions such as prioritising resources and
