Distinction One - Evaluate the effectiveness of the search in maintaining security of people,
premises and property in a specific public service
The stop and search method used by the police service is in place to tackle and prevent
crime. The purpose of the stop and search is to stop any suspicious individuals who the
police may think have prohibited items on them such as weapons, drugs, stolen goods and
explosives. Under the act of section one of the Police and criminal evidence act 1984 gives
the powers to the police officers to carry out the searches. The police officers have to follow
a various rules to ensure that the individual's human rights is upheld. Before carrying out the
searches the police officers have to pre plan. This consist of identifying if the location for the
search is appropriate for the individuals and they have the consent. The officers need to
ensure they have the equipment they require when carrying out the search.
PEOPLE
There are many different advantages and disadvantages of maintaining the security for
people when doing the stop and searches. The effectiveness of maintaining security for
people with these searches is that the searches are extremely quick and easy to carry out.
This is an effective as the searches can be carried out quickly on the streets, which only take
up a small amount of police time and public time. Another advantage of the searches when
maintaining security is because when the searches are being conducted, the officers are
likely to find and identify prohibited items that the person have on them. This is because the
stop and searches are carried out on the streets without any warning. The reason for why
the stop and searches are effective is due to the security for people are being upheld when
the police confiscate weapons and more that are used to carry out crimes.
Target Proportion of searches
Drugs 63%
Offensive weapons 14%
Stolen property 13%
Going equipped 8%
Other 1%
Firearms 1%
Criminal damage 1%
After researching about what the stop and searches target, i found this table from the
website http://www.stop-watch.org/your-area/area/metropolitan. This table shows the
different percentages of items which they target for. As shown from the table, stop and
searches mainly target drugs and offensive weapons. The effectiveness of targeting these
items reduces that amount of crime being committed, keeping the security of people
maintained.
I believe that the method of conducting stop and searches is very effective when maintaining
security to people. I believe this from the evidence i found on
http://www.stop-watch.org/your-area/area/metropolitan. In April 2015 to March 2016 there
