De chaosAdam kan net zoals zijn moeder, Jem, de sterfdatum van mensen in hun ogen zien. Adam ziet bij
steeds meer mensen dezelfde sterfdatum, 1 januari 2027, en hij weet dat er een grote ramp zal
gebeuren. Hij begint nachtmerries te krijgen over brandende gebouwen en voelt steeds vaker een
verstikkende pijn.
Sarah heeft, sinds ze zwanger is, ook last van nachtmerries. Ze droomt hoe haar baby wordt
meegenomen door Adam, die ze nog niet heeft ontmoet, in een vuurzee. Als ze elkaar tegenkomen
op school is Sarah doodsbang voor hem en probeert ze hem te ontwijken, maar Adam probeert juist
met haar in contact te komen, want hij weet dat Sarah een droom heeft over wat er gaat gebeuren
op 1 januari.
Als Adam Sarah smeekt om met hem te praten stemt ze uiteindelijk toe en verteld hem over haar
