De lege stadDe lege stad speelt zich af in Rotterdam tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Katja is pas getrouwd met
Daniel en ze leven in mooi huis in Kralingen. Haar ouders hebben een kruidenierswinkel in Rotterdam
waar Katja dagelijks langs komt, omdat ze geen baby heeft zijn haar dagen nog erg leeg. Op 14 mei
ging Katja weer langs bij haar ouders in de kruidenierswinkel. Haar zusje vierjarige zusje Lieke was
ziek dus kwam ze die ophalen om het haar ouders wat makkelijker te maken. Ze waren nog maar net
vertrokken of Rotterdam wordt overvallen door een hevig bombardement. Katja kan nog net op tijd
een schuilkelder bereiken samen met Lieke en Thijs, maar door het bombardement zijn haar ouders
en een broer en zus omgekomen. Ze besluit om de rest van haar broers en zussen in huis te nemen
en voor hun te zorgen. Maar naarmate de oorlog verder ging werd het steeds moeilijker om voor de
kinderen te zorgen.
