Viktor en Nadja zijn een tweeling van twaalf jaar oud als Hitler de oorlog verklaart aan de Sovjet-
Unie. Als het te gevaarlijk wordt voor Viktor en Nadja in Leningrad (nu Sint-Petersburg) worden ze
door hun ouders in een kindertrein gezet en krijgen ze allebei een schriftje om hun avonturen in op
te schrijven, maar ze komen per ongeluk in verschillende treinen terecht. Ze zijn vastbesloten om
elkaar weer terug te vinden. In twee fonkelrode sterren in de blinkend witte sneeuw schrijven Nadja
en Viktor hun zoektocht naar elkaar en de belevenissen die ze meemaken op aan elkaar in hun
schriften, als een soort dagboek.
Het boek is spannend van begin tot eind. Als je er eenmaal in zit kan je het boek niet meer
