M.2: Assess different methods professionals might use when building relationship and
establishing trust with needs
In this assignment I will be speaking about different methods a carer can use when building
relationships and establishing trust with Valarie and Tremaine. Building relationships and
establishing trust is important for both the careers and the service users because they will have a
bond and the service users will feel more obligated to listen to them and get the help they need.
Valarie:
Valarie professionals could use the Bowlby theory to build trust and empathy. The Bowlby theory Is
a theory which states children are biologically programmed to form attachments in order for them
to survive (A relationship with a human). Attachment to the child's primary care giver is essential as
it is a model for the children's future attachments. It is an extremely critical period and a disruption
to an attachment could have a negative impact on development. This links to Valarie as Valarie had
lost both her parents at the age of 6, meaning she never got to continue the relationship with her
parents and Bowlby stated that the sensitive period is for around 5 years. The theory then links to
how Valarie has all these mental health issues and low self-esteem as well as her obesity as Bowlby
stated that maternal separation at an early age can lead to permanent emotional damage. As her
parents have died, she has no one to form that attachment too as she does not have a job meaning
she will not socialize with peers. This means that the professional could use Bowlby's theory so that
Valarie forms an attachment to them.
This method could be useful in building relationships and trust as once this attachment is formed it
can help her development. She would trust her professional's word and would be able to open up to
her about the issues that have been in her head. She would then seek her professional for any type
of advice and change her mind about losing weight. As well as this the professional will be able to
make her feel happy and confident in her own self.
Some issues may arise when building that trust and this is because Valarie might have a deep fear.
This means that she would believe whoever she forms an attachment to, will die (just like her
parents) and she would keep a barrier between her and her profession to not allow anything to
happen.
Another theory which professionals could use to build a relationship and establish trust with Valarie
is the Hoffman theory. The Hoffman theory was based on emotional and social development-
specifically on empathy and how we develop morally. Our moral development includes how we
behave and our senses of rights and wrongs. This can link to Valarie because she would then gain
trust in the professional because she has been so deprived from empathy after being isolated from
people because she doesn’t socialize, because she doesn’t have a job- meaning her burdens are still
on her as she would have no one to speak to.
This is important in building relationships and trust as by giving empathy by asking questions and
having a genuine interest in what Valarie is saying- she will then trust you and begin to open up
more about stuff which she hasn’t told anyone due to the sense of interest that the service provider
has. This will help her as she will grow more confident in speaking about things which trouble her, as
well as getting those burdens off her chest.
Some issues may arise when using this method to build trust as Valaire could feel offended at the
empathy given and take it the wrong way due to the wrong sort of empathy being shown. For
example, if the service provider began empathizing but made the situation about themselves,
Valarie would feel offended as she came to speak about her own situation does not bear the other
situation – this shows what problems could occur, but it also shows the right sorts of empathy
should be given,
Tremayne's professionals could use the triangle of care when building relationships with trust and
empathy. Triangle of care can be used for mental and physical health care. It is a 3 way between the
