M1: Analyse the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals with different needs
D1: evaluate the success of promoting anti-discriminatory practice for specific individuals
with different needs
In this assignment I will be analysing the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals with special
needs such as Valarie and Tremaine. As well as this I will be evaluating the success of promoting anti-
discriminatory practice.
Valarie
One service which Valarie can access is accessing a hearing appointment with the GP as she has hearing
loss. This will help prevent discrimination for Valarie as she will be able to access hearing aids allowing
her to hear people properly. This will boost her confidence in socializing and interacting with others as
she won't have the worry of not being able to hear them and asking them to speak up. It will also boost
her self-esteem as she wouldn’t feel like she's different to others and she wouldn’t worry about missing
out on opportunities just because she can't hear. One other service that Valarie can access is accessing a
job by going to a Job Center. This will help prevent discrimination for Valaire as she will be able to earn a
living for herself and not have to depend on universal funds. This will boost her independence as well as
giving her the ability to acknowledge her worth as she will be able to treat herself with her own money.
This will also help her with her mental health issues as her job would keep her busy and she won't have
negative thoughts as often due to her being distracted by her work. One other service that Valerie can
access is a therapist to help overcome her childhood trauma of losing her parents at the age of 6. This
will help prevent discrimination against Valarie as she will feel valued that she had access to therapy,
just like everyone else would. This will also help her with her mental health issues Aswell as she would
be getting all those burden off her chest, and finding ways to heal from her trauma, as she hasn’t had
this support due to her not socializing and not having a job.
A diet means a special course of food to which a person restricts themselves either to lose weight or for
medical reasons. Valarie needs a diet due to her being obese and it risks type 2 diabetes and other
health issues.
As she is obese, she would need a dietician to help avoid any mental health issues. The dietician will
also need to be aware of her being vegetarian and make a diet plan for vegetarians. This will help in
preventing discrimination as it will make her more aware of the variety of vegetarian foods that are out
there, instead of being restricted to just food she knows about. Valarie will have more self-esteem as
there is help there and it's available for her.
Another access in which Valarie can receive for her obesity is a talk which can make her more aware of
the risk's obesity has. Valarie is unaware of why she should lose weight, and so by entering a group
discussion she will be open to more ideas and her ones could potentially change. This will help in
preventing discrimination as the ideas will be a variety of different ones and she would be able to relate
too some of them as well as being able to hear the other narrative. This will also help her in socializing
and in her communication skills. All of this would also help her in changing her opinions rather than her
feeling forced into it due to her health. Another access in which Valarie can receive for her obesity, is
her exercising with someone so that she feels less alone. By exercising with someone, it can help
, prevent discrimination as she isn't alone in this an she would feel more comfortable. Exercising with a
gym buddy will also help her especially with her mental health issues as research shows endorphins are
released during activities such as exercise. Endorphins would be good for her as they help relieve pain,
reduce stress and improve your sense of well-being.
Support for Valarie is of the most importance. This is because of her low self-esteem as well as all the
trauma from losing both her therapist. Research shows obesity is often associated with emotional
issues, such as sadness, anxiety, and depression. This shows how important support is for Valarie as well
as it helps prevent discrimination. One way how Valarie will be able to access and receive support is
going to a mental health group. This will help prevent discrimination as mental health groups are open
up for everyone so Valerie will be able to meet a variety of people and be able to speak to them
boosting her confidence. She will be able to open to them without feeling judgment and without feeling
isolated. By speaking about her problems, she will be more aware that she isn't alone. Another way how
Valarie will be able to access and receive support is by going to the police for being bullied and feeling
unsafe in her own flat. Valarie is getting bullied by local teenagers close by her house. Going to the
police will help prevent discrimination as the police are open to everyone and she will feel more
confident in her own environment, it will give her support knowing that the police have spoken to the
teenagers, and she will be able to feel confident in her own house.
Another way how Valarie will be able to access and receive support is by going to a job centre so she is
able to find a job for herself. This will help prevent discrimination as the job Centre will have a variety of
jobs open for her and her special needs. She will also be able to find a job for herself and be able to
support herself without using universal funds.
Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives
and talents. We also have the equality act which protects you if you're treated badly because you've
complained about discrimination. Nine characteristics that are protected by the equality act is
• disability.
• gender reassignment.
• marriage or civil partnership (in employment only)
• pregnancy and maternity.
• race.
• religion or belief.
• Sex.
• Age
Valarie can access the equality act for many reasons such as the belief one. Valarie doesn’t feel the need
to lose weight. The equality act protects her as it’s a belief. This helps in preventing discrimination as
Valarie can be able to believe what she wants without any discrimination happening towards her
Valarie can access the equality act for another reason such as the age one. Valarie can be bullied by
those local teenagers because of her age; however, the equality act protects her as it's her age. This
helps in preventing discrimination as Valarie can use the equality act so that they stop discriminating
against her.
There are numerous advantages that come with promoting anti-discriminatory practices for Valarie.
