Unit 29: Understanding Retail – Elizabeth Hammond

Government policy
Within this next part of my assignment I will be talking about the listed government policies
regarding Tesco’s.

Trading hours - within England and Wales small shops can open any day or any hour there are no
trading hours’ restrictons in Scotland. However, like large stores such as Tesco’s in which are over
280 square metres, can open on Sundays but only for six consecutve hours between 10am and 6pm.
Tesco’s and other larger stores must close on Easter Sunday and on Christmas day. For example, if a
store’s Sunday trading hours are restricted, they must clearly display what they are inside and
outside of their shop. The Sunday trading act which was governed in 1994 gives retailers the right to
trade on a Sunday. A Sunday trading day in Tesco’s is strictly 10am tll 4pm and this tme working is
would be strictly voluntary and premium pay would be ofered for example tme and a half.

Age to purchase alcohol, cigaretes and other items - Within shops like Tesco’s it is extremely rare
and hard for anyone under 18 to purchase items such as alcohol and cigaretes. Not only do you
have to be 18 to legally buy them but if you look under 25 they will challenge you for your id. This is
so lesser people will be able to get away with buying these items without having id and not only that
but it too is a legal requirement. All their alcoholic and cigarete items will be clearly labelled with
what you are buying and how much units or milligrams of nicotne you are consuming. Tesco’s policy
of preventng under-age sales is ‘We clearly communicate to our customers that alcohol is a product
for adults. We have strong systems in place to ensure we do not sell to underage customers,
including our ‘Challenge 25’ policy to help staf know when to ask for ID and refuse a sale where
appropriate. We also use tll prompts to alert staf to check for ID on alcoholic, low alcoholic and
alcohol-free products. Our colleagues are trained to understand their responsibilites and this
training is reviewed regularly. We also use mystery shoppers to test whether our cashiers are
correctly challenging customers to prove their age.’ Not only this but Tesco’s try to work with their
communites so that everyone can understand that they need responsible retailers in the
communites they operate in and play an actve role in underage drinking in local communites.

Labelling - if you are a retailer you must display: the price of products this must be in sterling
(pounds and pence) and include VAT where applicable. The price of a single item (the ‘unit price’) for
products that you sell loose. Metric measures like kilograms, centmetres or litres, for unit pricing –
except from some products for example alcohol is sold in units. But not only this, retailers such as
Tesco’s need to have clear labelled packaging when it comes to food especially. For Tesco’s to sell
their food and drink products the labels must be:

 Clear and easy to read.
 Permanent.
 Easy to understand.
 Easily visible.
 Not misleading.
 Allergen informaton.
 Fat, calories, sugar, salt etc.

Because obesity is becoming increasingly more common for people in this century all fat content
must be displayed on every item of packaging to make sure consumers know what will be going into
their bodies, they can pick items up and compare salt, sugar and fat contents and then chose which
one is best for them.
