Las mujeres y lo femenino siempre ha sido parte especial, casi fundamental,
del arte, pero no siempre de la misma manera que conocemos hoy en día.
Anteriormente, la representación de la mujer en el arte era meramente como tema
o forma, con un fin contemplativo y estimulante para un público mayormente
masculino.
A lo largo de la historia muchas mujeres crearon pinturas magnificas que,
debido a la época, no podían firmar ni decir que eran suyas, por ejemplo, hombres
poderosos y soberanos reclamaban sus servicios como pintoras, sin embargo, estos
solicitaban que no firmaran sus obras, de esta manera, algún hombre las firmaba y
tomaba el crédito de estas mujeres. Esto no solo pasaba en el ámbito artístico, sino
también en el literario.
Las mujeres artistas han tenido que superar barreras sociales y prejuicios para
poder expresar su visión artística y contribuir a la cultura visual. Sin embargo, la
influencia de las mujeres en el arte ha sido fundamental para su evolución y
diversidad.
Comenzando en la antigüedad, encontramos ejemplos de mujeres artistas,
aunque en menor medida que los hombres. Sin embargo, su trabajo era valorado y
reconocido. Durante el Renacimiento – importante movimiento artístico y filosófico
originario de Italia a finales del siglo XV – más mujeres pudieron acceder a la
educación artística y hubo una mayor presencia femenina en el arte, especialmente
