SAN AGUSTÍNANTROPOLOGÍA
La concepción del ser humano de San Agustín asume el dualismo antropológico
platónico. De esta forma, distingue en el ser humano dos partes: el cuerpo,
material, corruptible, temporal e imperfecto; y el alma, inmaterial, incorruptible,
inmortal y perfecta. San Agustín, al igual que Platón, considera que el hombre se
identifica propiamente con el alma. Afirma que “el hombre es un alma racional
que se sirve de un cuerpo mortal y terrestre”, pues el cuerpo está subordinado al
alma. Esto lo justifica aludiendo a que es creado a imagen y semejanza de Dios.
Distingue en ella dos aspectos: la razón inferior, cuyo objeto es la ciencia, y que
nos permite conocer la realidad material (entorno físico) a fin de satisfacer las
necesidades materiales; y la razón superior, cuyo objeto es la sabiduría, y
proporciona el conocimiento de lo inteligible (las ideas), para poder conocer a
Dios. Aquí tiene lugar la iluminación.
Finalmente, cabe destacar los aspectos en los que San Agustín se distanció de
Platón, pues no cumplían con las exigencias de la fe cristiana: la preexistencia
del alma, pues considera que Dios crea al hombre en cuerpo y alma sin ser
posible que ésta sea anterior a aquel; y la reencarnación, que choca con la
creencia cristiana de la salvación.
