The selfie generation can unplugThe digitization has undeniably made a big impact on the world, maybe an even bigger one on the
younger generations. After all, they never have known anything else. In contrast, the older
generations sometimes have a hard time adjusting to the rapid changes. Many people state that the
‘selfie generation’ couldn’t survive in an undigitized world and could not go without their mobile
phones. In my opinion, that certainly is not the case.
In the first place, the device is not an extend of our body. Therefore, we can simply put it away when
we do not need it. For example, we certainly will not be on our phone when we socialise with friends
or we are doing something we enjoy. This may sound unnecessary to emphasise, however the elderly
sometimes act like we are grown to our mobiles.
Secondly, it is simply not as bad as many people say it is. Numerous people exaggerate, since they
somewhat cannot comprehend the circumstances. If I had been born 50 years ago, I would have had
trouble finding my way in this new world too. Still, this is no reason to take any sorts of frustration
out on the young generations. Moreover, saying ‘everything was better back then’ does not help
anyone.
People who take the opposite view will ask why we refuse to live without our mobile phones. My
question is: why should we? The devices allow us to keep in touch with our friends, meet new people
and be entertained. In addition, smartphones make the world safer. After all, we can call the police or
ambulance if we need them, we less easily get lost and keep an eye on each other through live
locations.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that the ‘selfie generation’ can put their phones away and unplug. This
should not be as frequently questioned anymore. Conversely, what should be questioned is why we
would want them to put their mobiles away.
