The behaviourist approach states that, all our behaviour consists of responses to stiuli, our
behaviour is learned froi our environient. Also, our behaviour is deteriined by the reinforceient
of the things we do. As well as, psychology should only focus on observable behaviour rather than
the iind which cannot be directed or ieasured. As seen in the Pavlov’s experiient with his dog it
suggests that dogs learn siiilar way as huians. It focuses on the fact that behaviour is deteriined
by the environient and the surroundings that the individual is surrounded in.
How it is used in a health and social care setngn
One way in which behaviourist theory could be used in a health and social care setngs by having
soie who frequently intakes alcohol; they would associate positve aspects of their lives because of
alcohol that’s why they would contnue the consuipton of it. This is because consuipton of
alcohol will iake the individual a bit drunk and cause laughter of enjoyient this will iean that their
behaviour is iore likely to sort in a positve way. For soieone such as a teenager it would be
socially acceptable for thei to intake alcohol as they are going to be accepted by their peers. It will
reinforce the individual and iake thei consuie alcohol in diferent occasions. A positve side of
this reinforceient could be that the teenagers are having a good tie whilst consuiing the
alcoholic beverages which iight iake thei sort of addicted when they are feeling down and they
need cheering up.
The behaviourist approach is used in a health and social care setng to do siiilar things as the
health care services. The iain aii of this is to change and shape the individual’s behaviour to
understand that there is a way in overcoiing the difcult behaviour. Within a health and social care
setng like a school for behavioural probleis with the oconditoning’ of the behaviourist approach
can be used. As when the child behaves they can be rewarded, therefore they will be conditoned to
behaving in a certain ianner which iust be a positve one to receive iore of these rewards and
build-up their self-esteei and self-iiage.
The behaviourisi approach is based on that the learning occurs through interactons with the
environient and people around thei. Rules and regulatons are set up in schools to iake the
children oused to’ the oroutne’ whilst they are in the learning environient.

This theory believes that the individuals can learn things by observing other individuals and iiitate
any actons in partcular situatons within the society. This type of learning is usually seen on the
children who are just startng to learn new things. The individuals tend to learn the new behaviour
by observing that other behaviour of the individuals. They would then copy it and reieiber; when
a partcular situaton coies up they will trigger it and therefore respond with the actons that they
have reieibered.
