Critical theory is the method of inquiry in philosophy that radically questions
existing social, political and economic systems. Critical theorists believe that all
forms of authority are oppressive and that we will never be free while having
authority over us. Systems theory sees everything as a whole and does not
believe a person will understand something better by splitting it into parts. It is
not social criticism.
If you look at the education system we can see how systems theory perceives
the nature of systems. The education system has a lot of parts but would not be
seen as an education system if you look at each part individually e.g. the
parents, governing body members. The system as a whole includes the
everybody internally and externally from the department of education to the
youngest learner etc. An education system needs to have goals otherwise
people would just be there without knowing what is expected from them.
Departments have goals to make sure every student gets the learning material,
teachers goals are to get through the learning resources in the allotted time but
also transferring the knowledge effectively, and students need to get certain
results to progress. The input in the education system are the teachers or
learning facilitators getting the learners to understand the work and the output
are the results of the learners.
Ludwig von Bertalanffy, the most famous system theorist and biologist believes
that all living organisms has to be seen as a whole and not split up into parts. He
developed his theory to the point where said that everything has to be seen as a
system in order to gain true understanding.
The system theory that helps us understand ourselves better is the one of Ken
Wilber. Wilber’s holon has four quadrants: inner (I); outer (it); inner collective
(social: we); outer collective (things). He claims that all forms of reality have
these quadrants. With these quadrants you can learn more about yourself and
eventually figure out what is going on in the human body.
Critical theorists believe that society are trapped by modern society. According
to them technology is evolving to fast and becoming more complex. They
believe that media is brainwashing society so that we (society) don’t see the
problems created by authority. They do not like authority and believe that the
mass media are driving people to do things that benefit the wealthy. Critical
theorists want us to reflect on society and look for the hidden reasons in
everyday things we do. This theory believes that knowledge should not be
manipulated by the powerful in society.
