In this assignment I will explore practises used to develop skills, techniques, and tactics for
performance, in order to do this, I will complete the following criteria:
Explain practices to develop skills, techniques, and tactics for sports performance
Analyse practices and their practicality, suitability, and effectiveness to develop skills,
techniques, and tactics for sports performance
Evaluate practices and their practicality, suitability, and effectiveness to develop skills,
techniques, and tactics for sports performance, making recommendations for adaptations.
I will start this assignment by stating and explaining the definition of the following key words:
Skill: A skill is the ability to produce a coordinated action by combining various movements using
different muscles and joints. The process of learning involves acquiring skills that are mastered
through observation and practice. The development of skills is aided by skilled and knowledgeable
coaches who provide support and feedback to athletes and other individuals. The term "mastered"
refers to the ability to consistently produce a skill with little effort and time. For example, a skill in
football would be step overs.
Technique: A technique is the way an athlete performs a skill therefore it is the way of undertaking a
particular skill. It is common for performers to use different techniques to produce the same
outcome. For instance, a technique would be the way you perform a chest pass in netball you must
ensure your feet are shoulder width apart and that you step into your pass.
Tactics: Tactics are how performers apply skills successfully in competitive situations in order for
them to win. Therefore, a tactics is a combination of skills being performed together in order to gain
an advantage over the performer's opponents. An example of a tactic is the fast break in basketball,
within this tactic the offense attempts to move the ball forward as quick as possible so that the
defence becomes out of position leading to them being outnumbered.
Now that I have stated and explained the key words I will explain, analyse and evaluate methods of
how to develop the skill and technique and tactical abilities of performers I will speak on the
following methods:
Isolated practices
Conditioned practices
Competitive situations
o Offensive
o Defensive
Isolated practices
During sessions coaches may use isolated practices to help develop skills, techniques and tactics.
These isolated practices are usually in the form of a drill or exercise which will break down the skill,
technique or tactic into steps and different part to make it easier for the athletes and participants to
master the skill, technique or tactic.
An example of this might be in badminton when a coach is trying to improve a serve. They may ask
the participant to repetitively serve the shuttlecock to a specific area on the opposite side of the
, court, however the serve will never be returned therefore making it an isolated practice. The coach
will give feedback to the participant in order to help them improve their serve.
Isolated practices are used to introduce skills as well as techniques that has not been fully mastered,
they are used to rehearse and refine the technique and skills. All the practices can be adapted in
order to help a perform to master a skill or technique, it is adapted by increasing the difficulty when
performers have mastered a skill and require further challenges.
This can help to further develop a performer’s ability to apply tactics as they are learning the skills
and techniques that will make up the tactics. In order to develop a tactics a coach will work with a
group of players continually in order to ensure they understand the tactics to use within certain
situations. Once the performer has mastered the skills and techniques within the isolated practices
the coach will apply them skills and techniques in a conditioned practice.
Skills & techniques
Example: As a football coach I will use a passing exercise in which all the participants are in a circle,
and I will shout a name in which the ball will have to be passed to. This will help to work on the
players passing.
Practicality: The exercise is easy to set up and requires minimal equipment this means that I will be
able to set this drill up within 5 minutes. All I will need to do is explain the rules and expectations of
the exercise to the participates, provide the football for the participants and give a demonstration to
the group. By the end of the session the participant should be able to pass the ball in the right
direction that I will ask them to while using the correct technique. Therefore because of this the
exercise is highly practical as it takes a small amount of time to set up, there is minimal equipment
needed and lastly, I received the outcomes I had wish which is that the participants should know
how to perform a pass correctly while making sure the ball is passed in the correct direction.
Suitability: I believe that this drill/exercise was adequately challenging the performers I was working
with all of them struggled to show technique and accuracy before the drill/exercise however after
the exercise most of the participants were able to direct their pass in the right direction while
showing the correct technique. The session outcome was exactly how I expected it, at the start of
the session I told the participants the techniques of a short pass as well as demonstrating the pass to
the class by the end of the session the group was able to tell me the technique to use, and most
were able to demonstrate the pass to me. Therefore, I believe that this session was suitable for the
group as the session was adequately challenging and the sessions supported my aims and objectives
of the session.
Effectiveness: I believe that this session was effective as it successfully developed the skills and
techniques for a short pass. The exercise helped to adequately challenge the participants, support
my aims and objectives of the session, help the participants to gain an understanding of the skills
and techniques. The practice was able to be adapt for the participants that did not gain the
development I had hoped for. I got the participants to pair up and pass the ball to each other in a
straight to make it more difficult I made the distance between them bigger. At the end of the
session, I received feedback from the participates expressing to me that the session had helped
them to gain an understanding of the skills and techniques need to perform a pass. During the
session I ensured to give feedback and encouraging words to the participants which I was able to see
had a positive impact on their motivation. During the isolated practice I needed to stop and start the
