Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Answers with Explanations
In the case of a norm-referenced test the individual’s performance is …
1. expressed as a percentage
2. interpreted in terms of the performance of a representative group
3. normally distributed
4. compared to a criterion or standard of performance
The definition of a norm-referenced test is provided in section 3.6 in the prescribed book.
Oosthuizen and Phipps (2012) did a preliminary standardisation of the Stroop Color-Word
Test (a neuropsychological measure of selective attention) for Setswana-speaking
university students. Although there is no formal international standardisation of the test,
normative information can be derived from a study that was done in the Netherlands. This
study involved a purposive sample of 44 Dutch subjects who were healthy, non-concussed
volunteers. Ages ranged from 15 to 45 years. Individuals with a history of neuropsychiatric
illness and colour-blindness were excluded. The South African sample consisted of
university students (N = 102) from both genders, between the ages of 18 and 30 years.
Individuals with a history of neuropsychiatric illnesses, colour-blindness, previous
exposure to the Stroop Test were excluded. The students were from the University of
Limpopo, Medunsa Campus (a medical university). Snowball sampling was used.
There are similarities and differences between the South African and the Dutch samples in
the studies on the Stroop Color-Word Test described in the article. Given the purpose of
the test, which characteristic implies that the local sample is appropriate?
1. reading ability
2. absence of neuropsychological difficulties
3. language
4. age
Normative data (i.e. the typical performance on a test) can be obtained for any language or age
group as seen in the two studies described in the article. However, because
neuropsychological difficulties can impact on the performance on a neuropsychological test,
normative data are usually obtained for a sample of healthy subjects. Individuals with for
example, neuropsychiatric illnesses, therefore need to be excluded as was the case in both
these studies.
