COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP
Communication skills used by the nurse delivering direct client care are also used by the nurse
leader. The main differences are the purpose and primary means of communication. This
learning activity focuses on communication from the leader and organizational perspective.
Which type of communication develops from working together over time and building
relationships?
Edelman et al. (2018) discuss a channel of communication called metacommunication. Many
groups develop this when they work with the same team for a while. It is communication that
comes from relationship building and understanding others in the team well. Most often, through
nonverbal cues alone, one team member understands what the other member is
communicating.
Spouses, business partners, best friends, and others in close working relationships can have
complete conversations without saying a word. Potter et al. (2017) adds the idea that
metacommunication is developed through awareness and observation so that one individual
can accurately read the communication even when the verbal message is different.
Verbal communication includes the words used.
Nonverbal communication includes the actions of the body during communication, including
posture, hand gestures, distance between those communicating, tone of voice (sarcastic, loud,
comforting), eye contact, body movements, facial expressions, and speech patterns (speaking
fast or slow, pausing in unexpected places).
Nonverbal communication reinforces verbal cues to strengthen the message. However, if
nonverbal cues contradict verbal cues, the message may confuse the recipient, resulting in trust
and connection issues.
COMMUNCATION CYCLE:

Communication is an active process and requires a sender and a receiver, as depicted by Potter
et al. (2017). Select the proper aspect of the communication process for each question.

perceptions, and understanding of the message.

Referent: A factor or stimulus that causes the sender to initiate the communication.
Stimulates a message that is sent through a channel to the receiver.

True: The channel of communication plays a large role in the quality of the communication.
For example, the understanding of a message might change dramatically depending on
how it is delivered.

Sender: Initiates the communication

Receiver: Receives the message, interprets it, and provides feedback, therefore completing
the communication cycle

Feedback: The message that is received back by the sender from the receiver of the
original message.

Environment: The setting in which the communication is occurring.

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

In the most basic form, communication is a method for people to share their thoughts and
ideas. Someone sends a message and someone else receives the message. Sounds simple,
right? Unfortunately, other factors can impact, or even block, communication. When two
people are talking, those factors include the environment (e.g., noise level, distractions, or
privacy), the topic of discussion, and the unique factors of each person (e.g., education,
cultural background, beliefs, point of view). These factors can distort the message or cause
the receiver to misunderstand what the sender intends to communicate.

The center of communication is the message itself, which is composed of verbal and
nonverbal cues. During face-to-face communication, both the sender and receiver are
exposed to both verbal and nonverbal cues. If one person is distracted by a sound in the
other room, the other person also hears it and understands if the other person does not
answer a question immediately.

Change that face-to-face interaction to a virtual meeting or call during which both parties
can see each other, the nonverbal cues are more readily misinterpreted. If one person is
listening on mute and they hear a loud noise from the room in which their child should be
sleeping, the other person may not understand what happened and why the first person is
no longer engaged in the conversation.

As more of the environmental and nonverbal cues are removed from communication, the
verbal cues increase in importance, as in phone calls without video and written
communication.

Nonverbal communication is communication without words or symbols and includes voice,
eye contact, physical appearance, gestures, and posture.

THE CHALLENGDE OF WRITTEN COMMUNICATION:

In a large organization with multiple layers of leadership and departments, written
communication is frequently used to communicate important information to all colleagues,
such as changes in leadership, updated policies, and changes in benefits. While this allows
for a uniform message to be shared with all colleagues within the organization, mass
written communication has drawbacks, making it the least effective method to share
information.

Without the nonverbal and environmental cues present with face-to-face verbal
communication, written communication used within an organization is open to
interpretation by the reader, lacks the opportunity for the reader to ask questions or
provide feedback, and can be ineffective.

As you read the two examples of organizational communication from a director to all
colleagues in a materials management department, imagine how you would feel reading
each if you worked in that department.
