Unit 8: Psychological Perspecties for ealth and Social Care
D1 Eialuate two psychological approaches to
health and social care seriice proiision.
Introducton
In this assignment I will be eialuatng the psychodynamic approach and behaiiourist
approach to health and social care seriice proiision.
Behaviourist approach
One of the greatest strengths of the behaiiourist approach is that it focuses merely on
behaiiour, which can be obseried and manipulated under laboratory conditons, as the
eniironment is highly controlled, collectng objectie uanttatie data. The associaton
with alcohol consumpton can be documented with ease, for example. Carrying out
scientic iniestgatons proposes that the research is extremely repeatable due to the
controlled systematc manner of the analyses. This is the strength of the perspectie, as
using scientic methods giies added status to psychology. In additon, the principles of
behaiiorism haie been tested mainly on animals. Such indings may not apply totally to
human behaiiour, which is much more complex. This ethnologist (the study of animal
behaiiour) argues it is a weakness because it ignores innate biological factors.
The behaiiourist approach concentrates on the present, rather than exploring an
indiiidual’s thought processes, innate biases and in turn iiews indiiidual in a iery
mechanistc manner; reducing complicated processes to simple stmulus-response
behaiiors. This may be considered a weakness as a more applicable explanaton may
haie been disregarded. oweier, it may also regarded an adiantage as many
indiiiduals are obliiious of the occurrences which haie concluded in their abnormal
behaiiors, and also abandoning the undesirable behaiiour may hold greater
importance, in comparison to comprehending the causes of the behaiiour.
Coniersely, if an approach fails to treat the underlying causes of the behaiiour, it is
probable the behaiiour will return subse uent to the treatment the indiiidual receiies,
for instance, Systematc Desensitiaton and aiersion therapy.
In spite of the behaiiourist perspectie haiing conienient and beneicial implicatons for
treatment, these treatments haie the ability to create ethical issues. As with the
example stated aboie, the seriice user would haie to experience a traumatc period of
