Theories of Communication
P2 – discuss theories of communication
There are two theories of communication that aims to achieve effective
communication, these includes Argyle’s theory of the communication cycle and
Tuckman’s stages of group interaction. Argyle’s theory of the communication cycle is
suitable for one to one conversations, whereas Tuckman’s stages of group
interaction is suitable for group settings. Effective communication is any method of
communication that achieves the desired result, so that the individuals can
understand and express needs or respond correctly to instructions.
In Argyle’s theory of the communication cycle there are six stages. The six stages
include, an idea occurs, message coded, message sent, message received,
message decoded and message understood. Argyle believed that interpersonal
communication was a skill that could be learned or developed and they believed that
good communication involves the process of checking understanding, using
reflection, which is commonly referred to as reflective listening.
The first stage in Argyle’s theory of the communication cycle is an idea occurs. In
this stage, a person would have an idea that they wish to communicate with another
person. The second stage in the cycle is message coded. During this stage, the
sender would think through how they are going to say what they are thinking. The
Sender would put their thoughts into either verbal methods such as talking in person
or through the phone or they could use non-verbal methods such as British Sign
Language.
The third stage in the cycle is message sent. The sender in this stage would either
use verbal methods of communication or non-verbal methods of communication to
attempt to send their message to the receiver. Examples of ways a message could
be sent can include speaking, signing or writing. The next stage in the cycle is
message received. The person receiving the message would have to get the
sender’s message. They would either hear, feel or see the sender’s message.
