Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a chemical used as an insecticide in agriculture.
However, due to its adverse effect on humans, and the environment it has been banned in many
countries (Saylor Academy, 2022). But some countries like India use DDT for controlling
mosquitoes that spread malaria. One of the major issues with DDT is that it will last for a long
time in the environment and animal bodies (CDC, 2009).

These chemical has been banned after several studies showed their harmful effects. When
humans are exposed to high doses of DDT various health issues like vomiting, seizures, effects
on the liver, and reproduction could happen (CDC, 2009). Based on this the production and
distribution of DDT is unethical even if the receiving country allowed it. Companies should have
their own internal ethical standards regardless of the laws in the country.

These ethical standards should be the guiding principles and not look for loopholes to exploit the
system. These types of unethical practices will endanger people's lives, the environment, and the
company's brand. Companies should find ethical ways to do business using technology as a tool.

As mentioned above, every company must notify the users of the possible negative effect of their
products. This includes the procedure that needs to be followed for safe use including the level of
dosage, storage and application methods. This responsibility should be upheld despite the
specific laws of the country regarding DDT. As mentioned above, the product has been banned
globally except for very specific uses.

When it's to be used for a specific condition that's allowed by law then the company should
provide all technical specifications and manuals for safe use. Additionally, providing technical
support and consultation is necessary. Furthermore, if the production process used in DDT
manufacturing exposes the employees then mitigation methods should be devised.

Furthermore, there are alternatives chemicals like deltamethrin that have less risk to people and
the environment (Saylor Academy, 2022). Hence, companies should find ways to promote
alternative chemicals and minimize the production of DDT. Companies should set a budget for
R&D to produce alternative chemicals and communicate the results with countries and workers
using DDT.
