De belangrijkste digitale sporen met forensische bewijswaarde vind je in een computer bij de Data
Storage (HDD, SSD, CD/DVD) devices en Main memory (RAM - intern geheugen) + CMOS RAM
Central Processing Unit is het hart van je computer, hier wordt alles berekend. Tussen deze lagen
vindt continu uitwisseling data uit. De CPU verwerkt data en heeft interne memory in de vorm van
registers en cache maar dit memory is zeer vluchtig.
Main memory - RAM (Random access memory). Het besturingssysteem, applicaties en specifieke
data welke in gebruik zijn worden tijdelijk opgeslagen zodat de CPU snelle toegang heeft tot deze data
(primair geheugen). Het is een zeer snel geheugen en vele malen sneller toegankelijk dan een
harddisk. Als de computer wordt uitgeschakeld is de inhoud van het RAM in principe verloren
(vluchtig). Het is onmogelijk om een juiste forensische kopie te maken, doordat je hiervoor applicaties
nodig hebt laat je altijd wel sporen achter.
