IGCSE/GCSE Biology Edexcel Revision Notes PDF - Section 1 - The nature and variety of living organisms. Includes deatiled and comprehensive revision notes on the first topic from the Biology 9-1 Edexcel specification.
Characteristics of Living Organisms
● Living organisms show a range of characteristics that distinguish them from dead of
non-living material
● The life processes are supported by the cells, tissues, organs and systems of the body
The 8 Characteristics of Life - MRS H. GREN
Movement
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place.
- Animals can move their entire bodies, whereas plants move parts of their body in response
to external stimuli such as light
Respiration
The chemical reactions that take place in living cells to release energy from nutrients. This energy
is used for all chemical reactions that keep the body alive.
Sensitivity
The ability to detect and respond to changes in their external or internal conditions (stimuli)
Homeostasis
The control of internal conditions to provide the best conditions inside cells for all the reactions
needed for life to exist.
- E.g. our bodies control how much water is absorbed and removed from the blood, so cell
processes can work efficiently
- E.g. internal body temperatures for enzyme reactions to work efficiently
Growth
This is the permanent increase in the size of cells or the whole body of an organism
Reproduction
All the processes of producing more offspring of the same kind of organism to survive
Excretion
The removal from organisms of toxic waste products.
- E.g. animals cannot use C02 produced during respiration.
Nutrition
The taking of nutrients, such as organic substances and mineral ions, into the body. Nutrients are
the raw materials that cells need to release energy and to make more cells
- E.g. animals eat other organisms - heterotrophic (different feeding)
- E.g. plants use photosynthesis - autotrophic (self feeding)
Questions - page 11
1. For each of the 8 characteristic, give one example for:
a. A human
b. An animal
c. A plant
2. For each of the eight characteristic, explain why they are essential to a living organism
