Chronic Adaptations
- Individual variability
- Metabolic adaptations to endurance training
Responders: people who see change to stimuli
Non-responders: people who don’t see change or very little change
to stimuli.

Aerobic training isn’t just for long distance.
Aerobic contribution adaptations do have in uence on
performance. The longer the distance of running the higher the
contribution of the aerobic system.

The higher the distance of running, the higher the oxygen cost.

Metabolic adaptations
Study in the slide.
As well as improving Vo2 max, they were more e cient as well. For
the same VO2, less carbohydrates were being used which is good
as more carbs can be used later for more exercise.

Short period (2 months) of physical conditioning decreases
glycogen utilisation and an enhanced fat oxidation.

When looking at studies, look at the limitations too so you can
understand study from a di erent perspective and see what they
could’ve done better.

Context is very key:
- Subjects only get tested at same absolute work 2.3L of VO2
- The participants were sub elite, young, students working in lab,
all of them are males, which is an issue as it limits the study to
one group of humans, not elite athletes.
- Tested at a single sub maximal intensity.
- Studies may lack ecological validity especially if VO2 is being
tested whilst the participant is in a fastened state.
