Models present a systematic, and most often simplified description of what they
represent. Such a description is a helpful instrument to study the characteristics of
what the model represents.
UML offers a notation of visual, symbolic models, but models can also be physical or
mathematical.
Creating a UML class diagram for a business will enable to pinpoint what makes this
business unique and will provide a good starting point for developing an information
system.
The conceptual model created for understanding the business needs to be part of the
implementation architecture.

Professors can teach several courses. A course, in turn, can be taught by several
professors. For example, the course Business Information Systems is taught by Bart
and Jan. The course Database Management is taught by Linda only. When there are
too many students registered for a course, an exam can be distributed among several
exams running simultaneously, e.g. the same exam taking place in different rooms or
even on different dates. For example, the multiple choice exam of Business
Information Systems is taken by 300 students distributed across room A, room B and
room C. Linda takes oral exams. She takes 15 students per day, meaning that she
requires 4 days to interrogate the 60 registered students. Drag the different items
onto the appopriate zones below.
Consider the following text:
• Professors can teach several courses. A course, in turn, can be taught by
several professors. A course taught by more than one professor is still
managed as a single course, though: it has only one course description and one
exam, even though each professor may provide an own set of questions.
• There are three exam periods: January for first-semester courses, June for
second-semester courses and the retake session in August for all the courses.
Between January 15th and March 15th of the preceding academic year,
professors need to provide information on the evaluation type (oral or written)
and the number of students they wish to interrogate during 1 exam (in case of
oral exam). Depending on this information, one or more exams will be
scheduled for the course. Each course will have at least one final exam at the
end of the semester and a retake exam. Each such exam can be distributed
among several exams running simultaneously, e.g. the same exam taking place
in different rooms.
• For example, the course Business Information Systems is taught by two
professors. It is a multiple choice exam taken by 300 students on June 27th,
distributed across room A, room B and room C, each with a capacity of 100
students.
