Magnets

● A magnet is a material / object that produces a magnetic field
● Field lines : INTO the south - OUT of north
● More dense the field lines, the stronger the magnetic field




Permanent and Induced Magnets

● Actual magnet produces a magnetic field
● Magnetic material is influenced by a magnetic field
● Permanent magnets produce their own magnetic field all the time
● Induced magnets only have a magnetic field temporarily eg: nickel put in magnetic field
of permanent magnet
● Force between permanent and induced magnet will always be attractive
● When induced magnet is removed out of magnetic field, it will lose its magnetism
● Magnetically soft - induced magnet loses its magnetism very quickly
● Magnetically hard - induced magnet loses its magnetism very slowly

- Nickel - magnetically soft
- Cobalt
- Iron - magnetically soft
- Alloy : steel - magnetically hard

● Solenoid is an electromagnet because electricity is used to make the magnet
● Electromagnets are only magnetic for as long as the current flows through the wire
● Direction of magnetic field can be reversed by reversing the direction of the current
