1) Where is Burgundy?
A territory between Saone and Loire rivers, south of Troyes and north of Lyon
2) How did Burgundy become more powerful?
Through inheritance of the Valois dynasty, and the marriage of Philip the Bold to Margaret
(daughter of the Count of Flanders)
3) Which king was a problem for France?
King Charles VI became a serious problem, as he began to sufer from repeated and
prolonged bouts of insanity, seriously impairing the smooth running of government
4) Which political feud did Henry use to his advantage?
He used the rivalry between Duke of Burgundy (John) and Duke of Orleans (Louis), which led
to massive tensions between each of their supporters.
5) Why did Philip the Good of Burgundy ally himself with England and not France?
He resented the French claims of sovereignty over his Duchy, along with a deep-seated
distrust between the Dauphin and the Burgundians, which increased when various French
parties agreed to meet at Montereau to discuss ways to deal with the English ater the
murder of John the Fearless (revenge for killing Louis – Duke of Orleans) Philip broke of any
negotiations and formed alliance with English
6) Why was the Anglo-Burgundian alliance so signifcant?
It was crucial to the continuing success of Henry’s conquest of France if a French-
Burgundian alliance was formed it would have been a driving force against the English to get
them out of Normandy it also meant that Philip the Good supported Queen Isabella’s
faction in the French court
7) What happened afer the death of Henry V?
The English unity and strength took a serious blow, however the Anglo-Burgundy alliance
survived which was initially successful in the war against the French Armagnacs, but was
altered in 1429 when the French gained Joan of Arc as a new leader.
