Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) is an area of the
national curriculum that focuses on the non-academic development of
children such as dealing with moral conundrums. SMSC is important in
schools as it develops the children’s individual development, as well as
the development of society around them. SMSC within schools helps to
create themes that create the values within schools that the children
follow and taught about to become strong individuals and link to their
learning, “themes are intended to be cross-curricular” (Adams, Monahan
and Wills, 2015). Office for standards in education, children’s services and
skills (OFSTED) outline in their inspection handbook that SMSC “is a board
concept that can be seen across the school’s activities” and “inspectors
will evaluate the effectiveness of the school’s provision for pupils’
spiritual, moral, social and cultural education” (OFSTED, 2022). OFSTED
are looking for a curriculum that has strong links with SMSC throughout
the children’s learning that allows the children to develop themselves as
individuals. Schools help to support children in their SMSC development
with the use of the British values, “through ensuring pupils’ SMSC
development, schools can also demonstrate they are actively promoting
fundamental British values” (Department for Education, 2014, p.4).
My approach to teaching teachers about the importance of SMSC within
school as well as the importance of why we should be promoting SMSC is
to recap and educate teachers about the importance, effects and how
promoting SMSC supports children. The resource shows teachers how they
can make links to SMSC in lessons and activities that promotes SMSC, by
doing this it shows teachers that the are many links that can be made and
how they can be cross-curricula and interlinked.
My resource helps to support teachers re-educate themselves on the
importance of SMSC for the children, it reminds them that to support
children in becoming strong individuals they must be expose and taught
about others around them, about themselves, communities and the world
around them. The resource also outlines the use of teaching children
about values and how using the British values and how they link to SMSC
they can create school values to show children about following rules and
respect, “Schools take a great deal of trouble to teach and reinforce moral
values and codes of behaviour” (Goddard, Smith and Boycott, 2013, p.37).
the resource also shows the teachers on how SMSC links throughout the
curriculum help to support the children’s SMSC development by creating
links for example, in RE lessons moral development links are strong such
as respecting others religions, cultures and beliefs.
The teacher resource also shows to the teachers on how they can
implement SMSC links into other activities that are outside of the
classroom. Activities such as sporting events create the opportunity for
the children to use their SMSC development into practice from what the
teachers show from talking to the children, being a role model and
