About the contributors
Bernadine C Benson
BTech: Policing (cum laude) (PT); MTech: Policing (cum laude)
(TUT); DLitt et Phil: Police Science (Unisa)
Bernadine is a senior lecturer in Forensic Investigation at the
Department of Police Practice at Unisa. She joined Unisa in
2007 after a career of 19 years with the South African Police
Service. While employed within the SAPS Bernadine presented
papers at several national and international conferences and
symposia. She has presented and published locally on police
corruption, crimes against cultural property and has also co-
published on the handling of evidence in child rape cases.
She completed her DLitt et Phil in Police Science in 2013,
with crimes against cultural heritage in South Africa as her
specialist topic. She is the subeditor of the POLSA Journal as
well as the editor-in-chief of the South African Museums
Association Bulletin (SAMAB). Bernadine's research interests
include police corruption, integrity testing, art crime, fakes
and forgeries of art, looting of archaeological sites and social
media and its impact on crime.
,Trevor was employed in the South African Police Service for a
period of 11 years, the majority of which was spent
investigating white-collar crime. Upon his resignation he
joined the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) as a Forensic
Investigator, where he was responsible for the investigation of
corruption, fraud and maladministration. After resigning from
the SIU Trevor joined retail giant Edcon, where he worked in
the forensics department. He later moved to the
telecommunications industry and joined iBurst, where he is
the head of the forensic department.
Antony K Cooper
BSc: Information Processing (Computer Science and Cost &
Management Accounting) (Rhodes); BSc Hons: Computer
Science (Rhodes); MSc: Computer Science (cum laude) (UP)
Antony is a principal researcher at CSIR Built Environment in
Pretoria, specialising in standards and geographical
information science (GISc) theory and applications. His recent
activities cover spatial data infrastructures (SDIs), crime
mapping and analysis, bloodstain pattern analysis, logistics,
formal concept analysis (FCA), metadata, classification,
addresses, ethics, policies and programme management.

He is convenor of Working Group 7 of ISO/TC 211, Geographic
information/Geomatics, and chairs the Commission on
Geoinformation Infrastructures and Standards of the
International Cartographic Association (ICA). Antony is a
registered Professional GISc Practitioner (PGP) and is
, currently busy with a PhD on volunteered geographical
information (VGI) and SDIs.
Setlhomamaru Dintwe
B Criminal Justice (North West University); BTech: Policing
(TSA [Unisa]); MTech: Forensic Investigation (Unisa); DLitt et
Phil: Police Science (Unisa)
Setlhomamaru is a senior lecturer in Forensic Investigation at
the Department of Police Practice at Unisa. He was a detective
in the South African Police Service, stationed at Boitekong
Detective Branch in Rustenburg. After being promoted to
Principal Investigator, he was transferred to the Anti-
Corruption Command of the Independent Complaints
Directorate (ICD). He later headed the Investigation
Component of ICD in Mpumalanga. In 2006 Setlhomamaru
received an award from the Policing Association of Southern
Africa (POLSA) for being the best student in policing matters.
He also completed a certificate course in organised crime in
the former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia.
Setlhomamaru is an accredited assessor, moderator and a
certified designer and developer of learning programmes. He
is a departmental representative to the International Police
Executive Symposium based in the USA and has presented
papers at local and international conferences. His publications
and research interests include skills development, police and
civilian oversight, forensic methods and techniques and
monitoring in the criminal justice system.
