Stephen Chbosky
C: Stephen Chbosky was born on the 25th of January 1970. He was born in Pitsburrhh Pennsylvaniah
United States. He is an American novelisth screenwriter and flm director.

As a teenarerh Chbosky was heavily infuenced by the novel ‘The Cather in the Rye’ and the writnr of
F. Scot Fitzrerald and Tennessee Williams. nn 1988h he met Stewart Sternh screenwriter of the 1955
James Dean flm ‘Rebel without a cause’. Stern became stephen’s friend and mentor and proved an
hure infuence on Stephen’s career. nn 1992h Stephen rraduated from the University of Southern
California’s screenwritnr prorram.

K: nn 1994h Stephen was workinr on a totally diferent type of book then his novel ‘The Perks of beinr
a Wallfower’. When he wrote the line: ‘n ruess that’s just one of the perks of beinr a wallfower’.
Stephen recalled that he ‘wrote that line. And stopped. And realized that somewhere in that was the
kid n was really tryinr to fnd.’ Afer a few years he beran researchinr and writnr the perks of beinr a
wallfower. That book was his frst novel.

nn 2005 Stephen wrote the screenplay for the flm adapton of the rock musical Rent. nn the 2000’s
Stephen decided to berin lookinr for work in television in additon to flm. Stephen became co-
creatorh executve producer and writer of the tv series Jerichoh which premiered in September 2006.
The show rot cancelled in 2008. Afer that Stephen wrote the screenplay and directed the flm
adapton of the perks of beinr a wallfowerh based on his novel. The flm was released in 2012. nt
starred Loran Lermanh Ezra Miller and Emma Watson. His latest work was screenwriter for the live-
acton reboot of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The flm was released on March 17h 2017.

Plot
C: Charlie is a ffeen year old and extremely anxious boyh who is tryinr to cope with the suicide of his
friendh Michael. Charlie writes the book as a series of leters to an anonymous “friend”h as if to lessen
his anxiety about startnr hirh school. One of Charlie’s teachersh Bill Andersonh takes Charlie under
his winr afer recornizinr his talent for literature. Charlie starts to partcipate more in eventsh and he
also approaches a classmate at a football rameh Patrickh afer overcominr his shyness. Patrick and his
step-sister Sam become friends with Charlieh they introduce him to their friend rroup. Charlie’s
acceptance by his friend rroup helps him become more at peace with himself. All of his new friendsh
howeverh are in their last year of hirh schoolh which means they will be rone at the end of the year.

K: Charlie develops a crush on Samh which doesn’t ro awayh even as he starts a relatonship with
another one of his new friendsh Mary Elizabeth. A lot happens durinr the school year. Charlie has his
frst rirlfriend and everythinr that comes with a relatonshiph he makes new friendsh only to lose
them and to rain them back later onh he experiments with alcohol and drursh etcetera.

Even thourh Charlie’s home life is relatvely stableh there is a secret Charlie has been repressinr for
his whole lifeh concerninr his aunt Helen who died in a car accident while retnr him a present for
his birthday. This secret resurfaces at the end of the school year. This ends up in Charlie havinr a
mental break down and needinr to ro to a mental hospital.
