Types of teams
This essay is about the types of teams and their benefts as well as how they ft in to a workforce.
Different types of teams have their own strengths and weaknesses and each team is appropriate for
different types of proeects.
Virtual team
A virtual team consists of people that are connected through computers tablets and smartphones.
This allows a group to be formed around the world using social media such as WhatsApp skype
Facebook and LinkedIn. People of different levels of knowledge and experience can work together
from their own home and share ideas. A virtual team aren't likely to meet in real life so it lacks
socialisation.
Advantages
One advantage of a virtual team is that it only require a computer and access to the internet and use
social media so it doesn’t necessarily mean anyone has to invest in an ofce or building to work in
which makes a virtual team cost effective. Virtual teams have an advantage of leverage global talent
as the group isn't restricted to only having members from the UK and therefore people with higher
skills can be recruited and contacted easily. Members of the team have higher productivity rate as
they can complete their assigned tasks in their own time and in their own home and no one is
monitoring them and the group members manage their own time at a time that suits them.
Disadvantages
One disadvantage is the cost of technology to only work electronically. The members of the group
would require a computer that can run multiple sofware's at a time and be able to work for long
periods of time. The group members would need to have access to multiple social media platorms
to be able to communicate via video chat instant messaging and sending reports as one platorm
can't do everything. Since the group is completely virtual and it is unlikely for the group members to
know each other personally there can be a lot of trust issues as a result which can cause confict
and impact the way they communicate to each other. Also as a result of being a virtual group means
there is no real social interaction as everything is done behind a screen and the group members are
very unlikely to meet in real life. This impacts their personal life as well as they can do their work in
the click of a buton where as someone with an ofce eob leaves their work once they come home
and can make time for a social life without their work interrupting. Another disadvantage of working
virtually with people around the world is the chance of cultural confict as what is acceptable in one
culture or country may be and offence in another country. There could be possible language barriers
and if translating services are used for writen communication it could be inaccurate and change the
entire meaning of the sentence and look offensive or confuse the other group members. Another
struggle that team members can face are different time zones and getng everyone awake at the
same time for a video chat can be difcult and may interrupt sleeping paterns if it is a regular
occurrence.
