How would you advise a
patient who is a 15 yr old girl
asking for an abortion?
Checklist:

ICE the patient out- what are they expecting from the treatment, what their
concerns and ideas about the treatment are

Checking if they are able to consent to the procedure through capacity

Gillicks competency- tell the patient about the procedure, and make
sure they repeat it back and are able to understand the procedure with
sound logic

If they do not have capacity, then it is a matter of discussing with
parents. If patient does not want to let parents know, then it is a matter
of involving the local authorities or referring to the MDT and taking
further advice from there

Respecting the patients right to confidentiality- if you have to break
confidentiality, must do according to the Caldicott principles i.e. letting
the patient know first, only telling the relevant people and only
releasing relevant information

Raising concerns for safeguarding- if you feel like there may be a
safeguarding issue, it is your moral duty as a doctor to discuss this further
with the patient- this comes under the ethical pillar of beneficence- doing
what is best for the patient- reference to patient safety in the GMP 12 times,
this shows how important it is. Motivational interviewing

Holistic medicine- if there are problems regarding safeguarding, you are
there to remain empathetic and not to judge in any way. By remaining
empathetic whilst also maintaining a level of professionalism, this would
help for you to build a rapport between yourself and the patient, therefore
allowing the patient to open up more and discuss their problems. As the
patient comes, you are not there to solve the individual issue itself, but you
are looking after the patient as a whole- holistic medicine. MECC- Make
Every Contact Count
