The five most important misconceptions
 “You’re either creative or you’re not! You can’t learn it.”
 “Creativity is batik work or flower arranging. It’s for softies.”
 “My boss keeps me from being creative.”

Chapter 2 A Creative Mind

Human Thought
 Definitions
o What is thinking? Thinking is processing information.
o An efficient thought system is able to process this complex information quickly and
correctly.
o Thought patterns are clusters of data that we recognise as clusters and that we will
store if and when they generate success. Our habits of thinking.
o Experience is the sum of all patterns and habits we have acquired in the past that
make us able to act efficiently and effectively in a certain context.
o The thinking system enables you to learn fast due to the stability of these rapidly
acquired patterns.
o When something is not you’ll try another way.
o You build up experience with a number of successful patterns of thought and action
that you have made your own.
o Pattern-breaking (creative) thinking isn’t treated in a preferential way by nature.
o Creative thinking is a compendium of skills and techniques that we can learn.
 The human brain
o The signals (each a combination of an electric and chemical signal) are transmitted
through the neurons which form a jungle of thousands of antennae interconnected
in thousands of ways.
o A signal is composed of a combination of various chemical substances (called
neurotransmitters), which ‘leap’ between the cells.
 Thinking is about Following Connections and Creating New Ones.
o Through our life, several new connections within the brain are made active.
o This is why people can get disabled after an accident, some connections stop
working.
 Creative thinking
o Creative thinking is made up of different attitudes, thinking skills and techniques, and
thought processes that increase the probability of pattern breaking and the creation
of new connections in our brain.
o Creative thinking can be trained.

Basic creative skills
 Creative perception
o Perception creeps in, and tend to be more and more dominant.
o Creative perception is recognising tendencies and biases in your own perception (and
that of others) and setting yourself free from these.
 Postponing judgement
o There are three levels of judgement, which are not always distinguishable.
o Judgement 1: Generally happens subconsciously. (Have I noticed the conversation?)
o Judgement 2: I explore the new idea. (I reflect of it and gauge the consequences.
o Judgement 3: I will use this information/idea, or not. (I choose this or I reject it)
o By definition, new ideas don’t fit into existing schemes of thought.
o Postponing judgement is coming up with an idea and making sure they will reach the
third judgement level, though it is not seriously the best idea.
o How does this work.
 Opening  What is meant here? What is the idea?
 Accepting  Accept this new thought
 Exploring  Explore the opportunities created by this idea
 Judging  Judge what you are going to do with it.
