SECTION A: THE FIELD OF COMPARATIVE
EDUCATION
1. Comparative Education as an interdisciplinary field of
study
According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (2018, s.v.
‘interdisciplinary’) the concept interdisciplinary refers to a study that
involves two or more academic, scientific, or artistic disciplines.
Comparative education focuses on comparisons of different practices in
education in different countries, regions and periods of history
(Berkhout 2010:1). A noteworthy aspect of these comparisons has
been to describe, define, analyse, interpret and compare education
systems as they develop in the modern world.
a) Facets of Comparison
There are many facets of education that needs to be compared when
an educational comparison is being made (Berkhout 2010:4), such as:
Governance and control structures
o Analysing the structure of control to identify how the
power work in each system, where the power lies, who
makes the decisions. Is the control centralised or
decentralised? Is the control structure participative or
oppressive? These questions are only some of the
questions that needs to be asked in order to gain
perspective on the different governance and control
structures in the study.
