Photosynthesis involves conversion of light energy into chemical
energy.
Photosynthesis involves convention of inorganic molecules into
organic molecules.
Photosynthesis is an anabolic reaction. This is an endothermic or
endergonic reaction.
It is physico-chemical process.
-

anabolic process: C-C bond formation.
oxidation - reduction reaction.

Chemosynthesis:
→ Performed by few bacterias like nitrifying bacteria ; thiobacillus

Moll’s Half leaf experiment
KOH combines with all the carbon
dioxide present in the Test tube.
No CO2 left therefore, no
photosynthesis, no glucose, no
starch >> starch test negative
Leaf outside the test tube gets CO2
therefore,photosynthesis, glucose,
starch >> starch test positive.
This experiment shows that CO2
very important for photosynthesis.

, Bell jar experiment
Joseph priestly
(1733-1803)

Priestly sir hypothesised that air contaminated by mic and candle was
actually restored by mint-plant.
He discovered oxygen in 1774.
He suggested the role of air in growth of plants.
Jan Ignenhousz (1730-1799)
He used a set-up similar to what used by priestly.
He placed it once in dark and once in light.
He took aquatic plant (hydrilla) & kept it in sunlight.
Bubbles of oxygen were obser ved therefore Photosynthesis must have
taken place.
When put in dark, no bubbles were formed. Therefor no photosynthesis
had occurred .
Von Sach experiment
Julius von sach (1854) Chloroplast → chlorophyll → glucose → starch (storage )
Sach>> storage
Chlorophyll pigment is present in special boadies : chloroplast
Glucose → starch & Chlorophyll → chloroplast
T.W Engelman
It was seen that most aerobic bacterias were accumulated
in blue and red region.
Therefore we can say that blue and red region leads to
formation of more oxyen due to more photosynthesis. Acorobic

This gives us the “first action sepectra”. L
