Netball

Netball is a ball sport played by two teams of seven. It is mostly a women’s team sport, derived in the 1890’s from
early versions of the more masculine sport, basketball. By 1960, internatonal playing rules had been established
for the game. The Internatonal Federaton of Netball and Women’s Basketball (renamed the Internatonal Netball
Federaton in later years now has more than 60 natonal teams.1

The playing cours: Netball games are played on a rectangular court with raised goal rings at each end. These rings
are 15 inches in diameter, and are at the top of 10 foot goal posts with no backboards. A 16 foot radius semi-
circular shootng circle is at each end of the court. The netball court is 100 foot long, 50 foot wide, and is divided
lengthways into thirds. Below is a diagram of the explanaton above.

Aiml and game play: The aim of the sport, like
most team sports, is simply to score more goals
than the oppositon. A goal can be scored when a
team member (positoned in the atacking shootng
circle shoots the ball through the goal ring.

A game of netball lasts for 60 minutes, split into
four 15 minute quarters. Each player is assigned a
specific positon, which limits their movement to a
certain area of the court. A bib is worn by each
player, containing a two-leter abbreviaton indicatng their positon. 2

Goal Shooser (GS): This positon is allowed in the atacking third, including the shootng circle. They are ofen, but
not always, defended by the opposing Goal Keeper. Their main role is to shoot goals, by working closely with Goal
Atack to achieve positons in the shootng circle where they can receive passes from the mid-court players.

Goal Atacc (GA): This positon is allowed in the centre and atacking third, including the shootng circle. They are
ofen defended by the opposing Goal Defence. As well as sharing the Goal Shooterss role to shoot goals, the Goal
Atack is responsible for helping to set up offensive plays.
