The first step that t akes place with regard to digesting the sandwich is the cephalic phase. During this phase, the GI tract is prepared to digest food & this is also the earliest phase of digestion. The next step for digestion is chewing, whichstarts the mechanical digestion of the food. While chewing, saliva begins to secrete. Salivary amylase is an enzyme contained in saliva which assists in digesting the food. Once the food ha been chewed, it is swallowed & transported to the stomach through the esophagus with the assistnce of peristalsis. After the esophagus, the food reaches the gastro esophageal sphinter to ente the stomach. When in the stomach, gastric juices are produced which digests proteins & fats (Manore & Thompson, 2010).
