1. Purpose of the Assignment and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this assignment, students have:
1. Prepared high-quality written reports with accurate references and citations that demonstrate

a. Identified the features of a high-quality written report and incorporated them into their
reports.
b. Critiqued research articles and data in order to qualify sources of high-quality research.
c. Evaluated the importance of accurate references and citations.
d. Prepared accurate and complete references and citations for a variety of different
sources.
2. Located, selected and qualified appropriate sources of secondary information including
company, industry, consumer, demographic, economic and market data (as per specific
instructions below) using a variety of methods including research databases.
a. Used Statistics Canada’s Census data to locate data for a specific community.
b. Located, selected and qualify sources of other type of required information as specified
in assignment instructions.
3. Critically interpreted and evaluated the data collected and suggest potential trends and
implications.

2. Instructions/Details: formatting and submission information
a) This assignment is to be completed in-class in groups, throughout the duration of the course days,
including:
Research for information and sources;
Group discussion;
Triage of information;
Drafting the assignment; and
Submission of final version on Moodle.
b) The assignment should be structured as it follows -
Students are reminded to format their assignment template with a cover page, page
numbering, program title, course title, student names, and submission date, as well as a
references/sources page. References – APA style (in text and references)
Part 1 (A&B) (maximum 4 pages, excluding cover and reference pages, 2 files to submit, Word and Excel
and must b submitted to BOTH, Assignment and Turnitin, links)
Select a community that could be considered for opening the company store/selling the
company’s product (i.e. area in Toronto, must be in Canada) – provide the name of the
community
Perform secondary research for the selected community - locate, present, analyse and critically
interpret and evaluate the data collected and suggest potential trends and implications for
demographic data:
Part A: age (must create no more than 6 age groups), gender, education (must create no more
than 5 education level groups)
Part B: income (must create no more than 5 income groups), cultural diversity (can be
languages/ethnic origin; must present top 7 and create “other” group)
o Use Statistics Canada’s Census data to locate data for your specific community
Instructions on what must be achieved:
Must collect the data for two years, calculate % growth for each indicator or compare changes
in the % distribution (as appropriate), create tables and charts for each indicator, must present
data in Excel and Word format, must interpret the data (i.e. what the numbers mean).
Prepare accurate and appropriate tables and/or charts that present detailed information in a
visual format.
