,Lecture 1 Introduc on
- Why an energy transi on?
- How is the course organized?
Agenda
1. Who is Who?
2. Overview of the course
3. Introduc on to energy transi on
Overview of the course
The big Idea
- Can the insights from the innova on, strategy, entrepreneurship and economics literatures be
applied to help us to support the energy transi on?
Two aims:
1. To reflect on how we can help the transi on
2. To reflect on the value / insights from the literature
The big Idea:
Overview of the course
- Reading list – This lists the ar cles assigned to each lecture. There is no course book. All
ar cles are available on campus through Google Scholar & SmartCat.
- The ar cles may or may not be covered in class: they are supplementary, and have been
chosen to provide the student with a
more detailed understanding of the
board topics overviewed in lectures.
- The ar cles are examinable and there
will be ques ons on them.
Assessment
1. An Exam (60%)
- In which the students understanding
of the literature is tested
- The exam focuses on the theory and its applica on
- Two hours to answer:
o Mul ple choice ques ons
o Open/essay ques ons
- Exam: we don’t ask what is the regression coefficient on page 10, but we ask the broad view
of the topic.
- Last lecture will introduce some ques ons to answer the exam ques ons effec vely.
2
, 2. A Group Assignment (40%)
- Detailed outline of the assignment
- Examples of prior case studies
- Template for comple ng the case study
- Grading rubric explaining how it will be evaluated
Margarita Or z and Özgün Özben will be coordinate the assignments
Assignment: complete with primary or secondary data.
Introduc on to energy transi on
Energy transi on
1. What is energy transi on?
An “Energy Transi on” is structural change in an energy system
- The first two energy transi ons were technology led.
- Fossil fuels are a more efficient fuel than wood.
- And the effects of transi on were profound.
- Fossil (used to be) cheap and abundant.
- And that has been good thing for the world economy.
- Power consump on is correlated with GDP
per capita. Economy development is not possible
without energy.
3
, 2. So why mess with what’s working?
- Because fossil fuels are damaging our environment, and the market mechanism will not push
the next transi on in me …
- Fossil fuels are not only non-renewable …
But burning fossil fuels also releases dangerous emissions:
- Par culate Ma er (PM)
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
- Sulfur Oxides (SOx)
- Hydrocarbons (VOCs)
- Ozone gases (O3)
- Carbon Oxides (COx)
- Par culate Ma er (PM) and Nitrogen Oxides
(NOx): Are extremely hazardous to human health,
and are responsible for 6 million deaths a year.
- Carbon Oxides (COx): COx like carbon dioxide (CO2), are perhaps the most known of the
emissions that result from the burning of fossil fuels …
- More CO2 means more ‘insula on’ = the greenhouse effect
The green house effect is raising global temperatures
