Life Process
1. Life Processes:
o These are essential processes occurring in living
organisms for their survival.
o Four main life processes:
 Nutrition: Autotrophic (plants synthesize their
own food) and Heterotrophic (organisms depend
on others for food).
 Respiration: Anaerobic (doesn’t require
oxygen) and Aerobic (requires oxygen).
 Transportation: Movement of substances
within the body.
 Excretion: Removal of waste products.

2. Nutrition:
o Autotrophic: Organisms (like plants) that produce
their own food.
o Heterotrophic: Organisms (like humans) that rely
on external sources for food.

3. Respiration:
o Anaerobic: Occurs without oxygen.
o Aerobic: Requires oxygen.

4. Transpiration:
 Humans (Blood)
 Plants (Xylem, Phloem)

5. Excretion:
 Humans: This involves the removal of waste
products (such as urea) from the body through
urine, sweat, and other processes.
 Plants: Plants excrete waste products through
various mechanisms, including the shedding of
leaves and the release of excess salts.
6. Autotrophic Nutrition:
o Autotrophs are organisms that synthesize their own
food.
o Autotrophic mode of nutrition involves self-synthesis
of food.
o Two types:

,  Photosynthetic mode: Food synthesis in the
presence of sunlight.
 Chemosynthetic mode: Food synthesis in the
presence of inorganic chemicals.

7. Heterotrophic Nutrition:
o Organisms that depend on other organisms for food
and cannot synthesize their own food are
called heterotrophs.
o Heterotrophs follow different modes of nutrition.

8. Types of Heterotrophic Nutrition:

o Saprophytic Nutrition:
 These organisms digest food outside their
bodies.
 They feed on dead and decaying matter.
 Example: Fungi.
o Parasitic Nutrition:
 Parasites feed on living hosts without killing
them.
 Example: Cuscuta (Amar bel).
o Holozoic Nutrition:
 Organisms take in food int the form of solid
and liquid substances, and nutrients are
extracted from the food inside their bodies
through various processes provide them
nourishment.
 Examples: Humans, amoeba, and other
animals.

9. Photosynthesis Balanced Equation:
o 6CO₂ + H₂O + Light Energy (Sunlight, Chlorophyll) →
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
o Photosynthesis Reaction

10. Definition of Photosynthesis:
o Photosynthesis is a biochemical process occurring
in green plants.

, o It converts simple inorganic substances like CO₂ and
H₂O into the complex organic compound like glucose
(C₆H₁₂O₆).
o Sunlight and chlorophyll are essential for this
process.
o As a by-product, O₂ (gas) is released.

11. Steps of Photosynthesis:

1. Absorption of light by chlorophyll (conversion of
light energy into chemical energy).
2. Conversion of light energy and splitting of
water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen
(Hydrolysis).

3. Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to
Carbohydrates:

12. How do plants obtain CO₂?
o Plants have tiny pores on the surface of leaves
called stomata.
o Gaseous exchange occurs through these stomata for
photosynthesis.
o Carbon dioxide enters through stomatal pores, and
oxygen leaves as a byproduct.
o Guard cells regulate stomatal opening and closing
