Concept of the week: #4
Hannah Wood
‘A Child Like No Other’

• Brief synopsis of the film
In the short film we follow the mother of Jan, a child who was diagnosed with autism later on in
life. It showed his mother discussing the struggles she faces every day and how stressed out she
is. She discussed how the school system does not make education accessible for Jan and how
they call her many times complaining about his behavior which leads to them asking her to pick
Jan up from school. Her struggle with the school added more stress onto her. So, she met with
other parents of children with autism to see how they were able to cope with this issue. They
all shared different stories on how they attempted to support their child in school because the
school system had failed them. One parent mentioned a 1:1 education program but when Jans’
mother called to inquire about it, she found out it costs $55,000.

Well, autism spectrum disorder (also known as ASD) impacts the entire family.

1. Emotional: Families often experience a range of emotions when a member is diagnosed with
autism. Initial feelings of shock, grief, and confusion may arise as they come to terms with the
diagnosis and the challenges it presents. they will need to navigate the additional demands that
come with managing their family member’s needs.

2. Financial: Caring for a child or family member with autism can be very financially demanding.
Families may incur significant expenses related to therapy, specialized education, medical care,
and other interventions. Additionally, one or both parents may need to reduce their work or
leave their jobs altogether to provide care, leading to a loss of income and further financial
strain.
