5 Components of EMS Systems
1.) Reporting- Call is recieved from dispatch
2.) Dispatch- Notifcation to emergency personnel
3.) First Response- 1st trained personnel arrival
4.) EMS Response- EMS arrive in medical vehicle
5.) Hospital Care- Arrive at medical facility
(Legal Implications
- Plaintiff must prove gross negligence, wanton conduct, or intentional wrongdoing.
- Good Samaritan Laws
Consent
Actual- If judgement appears unimpaired you should obtain consent before treatment. (battery would be
commited if officer treated victim after refusal and held responsible for damages)
Implied- Patient is unconscious or judgement impaired medical care should not be delayed. (NOK
present must recieve consent from them)
Abandonment
- Officer should not leave patient until relieved by someone with an equal or greater certification level
- Must provide personnel all information on patients condition.
HIPAA
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
- Officers should not discuss medical care provided to a patient at an emergency scene. (does not apply
to sharing of info with other medical care providers.

- 12 ribs (10 join sternum or breat bone in the front) (2 called floating ribs)

Involuntary muscles- Work on their own automatically.
