SEMESTER 1
2024

, Q1 Compare and contrast logistics management with supply chain management
Comparison:
Focus:
Logistics Management: Logistics management primarily focuses on the efficient movement
and storage of goods from the point of origin to the point of consumption including in-,
outbound, in- & external movements (CSCMP, 2010).
Supply Chain Management: Supply chain management, while including logistics management,
has a broader focus. It encompasses the planning and management of all activities involved
in sourcing, procurement, conversion, logistics, and collaboration with various stakeholders
(CSCMP, 2010). " Bowersox, Closs, Copper (2013:4) describes supply chain management as
"Firms collaborating to leverage strategic positioning & improve operating efficiency
Scope:
Logistics Management: Logistics management has a narrower scope, mainly dealing with
operational aspects such as transportation, warehousing, and inventory management.
Supply Chain Management: Supply chain management has a wider scope, including strategic
planning, sourcing, production, inventory management, logistics, and collaboration with
suppliers, intermediaries, third-party service providers, and customers (CSCMP, 2010).

Contrast:
Functionality:
Logistics Management: The core function of logistics management is to ensure the timely and
efficient movement of goods to meet customer requirements.
Supply Chain Management: Supply chain management goes beyond logistics management by
focusing not only on operational efficiency but also on strategic alignment, value creation,
and collaboration with stakeholders to achieve competitive advantage (CSCMP, 2010).
Key Components:
Logistics Management: Key components of logistics management include order
management, inventory management, transportation, warehousing, materials handling, and
packaging.
Supply Chain Management: In addition to logistics management components, supply chain
management includes planning, sourcing, production, and collaboration with channel
partners (CSCMP, 2010).
Relation:
Logistics Management: Logistics management is a subset of supply chain management. It
operates within the broader framework of supply chain activities.
