Introduction
This report explores the principles of website development and what distinguishes a quality website from
a poor one. Websites are a crucial element for many businesses at the current moment, as they establish
an online presence and can be used for digital marketing to draw in more clients and make it convenient
for them to make purchases from the comfort of their own homes. Consistency, simplicity, and
functionality are some of the many contributing aspects. A business must adhere to these principles to
1
,guarantee the website is high-quality and customer-oriented. Failing to meet these requirements or having
an outdated website can turn away a lot of potential users.
To put this into perspective, I will use real-world examples of businesses that utilize online websites to
sell products. Both brands have a considerable online presence due to the numerous sponsors promoting
their products on several social media platforms, creating a sense of business competition between the
two and the ideal opportunity to assess and evaluate each brand's website to see to see how well it
complies with the principles and client requirements. These brands are:
MyProtein:
MyProtein is a British supplement brand founded by Oliver Cookson in 2004 and was bought by The Hut
Group in 2011 for £58M. The Hut Group owns several companies aside from Myprotein. The brand
revolves around selling nutritional products (such as protein powders or vitamins) and clothing to
frequent gym-goers. MyProtein is the main brand, however, it has branched out into a family of smaller
brands, such as “Myvegan”, “Myvitamins” and “MP Activewear” for each of the products that it sells.
RYSE Supplements:
RYSE Supplements is an American supplement brand founded by Nicholas Stella in 2017. Similar to
MyProtein, it focuses on selling nutritional/athletic performance products, gym clothing and additional
gear that can be used for lifting weights. It does not have a family of brands. RYSE focuses heavily on the
nutritional products that it sells and its variety of flavours.
Section 1: Purpose of websites [P1 and M1]
Websites can generally serve a variety of functions and purposes rather than pages that are made to
provide information. Websites can also be used by businesses that are in competition in order to prompt
users to view their website displaying their products or services. This highlights the importance of
website design principles so that developers are able to create them in such a way that matches their
purpose, but also lands a positive impression on users.
2
, Content based websites (Web 2.0):
Users could only read data from them when they were first created. Sites now allow user involvement as a
result of the development of Web 2.0 (which was published between 2003 and 2004). The development
of Web 2.0 was a significant breakthrough as it led to the creation of numerous content-based websites,
such as Wikis, blogs, podcasts and social media platforms, all which users are now able to add their own
content onto the website such as a post or a comment.
Product/service based:
These websites do not only have to be made for content but can also be developed for products and
services online. These consist of:
- Online commerce for consumers to conduct transactions using devices like mobile phones or PCs, such
as Amazon or eBay, as well as the previously mentioned sites (MyProtein, RYSE).
- Real-time information providers that offer the most up-to-date and recent news, such as BBC or Sky
news
- Communication services like Skype and Gmail for users to reply to others without cost
- Virtual learning environments like Moodle or Fronter that allow students to have the resources they
need online or for learning submissions.
Target audience:
The target audiences for each service vary, nevertheless, because of their varied purposes. Services, such
as communication platforms, may have a larger target audience that includes people in the workforce,
online gamers, teenagers, or even a business to conduct social networking with its customers. MyProtein
and RYSE generally have a target audience of people who frequently attend the gym or have an interest
in nutrition and athletic performance, with the main age groups being 18-34 and 35-54.
Requirements:
Despite all their differences, the basic requirements for these websites remain the same.
- Consistency:
Consistency with the website. This means keeping things the same in the design. A website’s
consistent design runs through many things. For example, the font and the colour schematic you
decide to implement.
Website 1: If we take a look at MyProtein, it consistently uses a blue and white colour scheme,
and the product image arrangement is the same (Each product has a grey background).
Website 2: RYSE also has a similar colour theme, however, the consistency of its fonts, font sizes
and labels are what separate it’s appearance from MyProtein.
- User-friendly:
- Navigational:
The website must have easy navigation so that users may get what they're looking for by
redirecting themselves. This can be in the form of a button, but it needs to be simple to press and
large enough to see.
Website 1: MyProtein on the other hand, does not have a feature where navigation screens appear
by hovering the mouse over the button, it can only be accessed by clicking on it. However,
MyProtein does have more visible navigation buttons on the website.
