Unit 2D
Introduction
Working in a Labatory environment requires particular skills to perform various experiments and tests accurately and safely. The skills are important for
Labatory technicians as they help them to perform their duties with high quality and professionalism, and to contribute to the advancement of science and
medicine.

Area Meaning
1. Personal Responsibility Science-related industries require a particular set of skills, personal qualities, and attitude from
potential employees.
This includes the ability to;

-follow strict safety procedures
-keep up to date with scientific developments
-improve the reliability of practical's
-perform calculations
-research and communication
-identify when stock needs re-sourcing
-prepare appropriate samples for testing
-perform essential lab tests
-use all Labatory equipment effectively
-perform essential maintenance of Labatory equipment
-record results accurately
-report to management
2. Work to appropriate standards and In order to comply with the fundamental expectations of working in a Labatory or other technical
protocols environments, you must ask yourself how prepared am I?
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) ensures routine and irregular activities are performed to a set
standard which are common in the technical industry. Examples of this are chemical testing, handling
of materials waste, operation and calibration of Labatory equipment.
It is paramount that you adhere strictly to a set of instructions when carrying out experiments and
investigations.
3. Application of safe working practices The Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) was introduced in the UK in 1974. It covers all aspects and
areas of the workplace and sets out the duties of the employers to their employees. This act involves
regulations and laws which have been produced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) designed to
prevent injury, death, and ill health to those at work as well as those affected by work activities.

, A poster which links to the Health and Safety at Work Act should be displayed in places of work.

As an employee, you need to understand the implications of the HSWA and perform all duties safely,
effectively, and according to the act and policies at work.

Other regulations that are very important in COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002)
and RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, and dangerous Occurrences Regulation 2003).
4. Accept responsibility for the quality of own To achieve the most from a given activity you must strive to be excellent in all that you do. You should
work “own” the work that you perform in your Labatory studies. This means you must accept full
responsibility for the work that you are undertaking, and the outcome of the work produced. You
should also take pride when performing a task and in the presentation of your work.
Leaners in scientific investigations should develop enthusiasm, adopt a “can do” attitude and
anticipate problems.
5. Take responsibility for completing tasks and When carrying out a task in a science Labatory, you will be supervised. However, the ultimate
procedures and use judgement responsibility for completing the work will rely on yourself. After identifying what needs to be
considered prior to starting a task and producing a plan in order to carry out the task, you must now
ensure that you complete the work towards the objective effectively, safely and with integrity.

This will include things such as having the correct set up of apparatus, understanding the step-by-step
methods that need to be followed, using informed judgements throughout the activity, determining
how the apparatus should be stored afterwards and completing clear up procedures effectively and in
accordance with safety guidelines.
6. Interpersonal skills Interpersonal skills are the skills we use to communicate and interact with other people, both
individually and in groups. They include abilities such as listening, speaking, negotiating, collaborating,
empathizing, and leading. Your skills when dealing with other learners, members of staff and other
personnel are vital in producing effective work which will contribute to your achievements in the
Labatory or other places of work. Interpersonal skills are extremely useful in determining the quality of
co-operation and the quality of understanding.

When working in a technical Labatory, it is important to have good communication skills, a high degree
of co-operation with others, the ability to give and receive feedback and exceptional standards of safe
working practices.
7. Professional practice All scientific Labatories have a minimum standard of expectations of the workforce to ensure that all
operations and activities carried out follow the strictest of standards and are performed to the best
ability of the technician. Therefore, it is important for all those working in a Labatory environment to
