4. Who is credited with writing the first English dictionary dictionary?
The first comprehensive English dictionary is often credited to the 18th-century British writer
and lexicographer Samuel Johnson. Johnson's dictionary, titled A Dictionary of the English
Language, was published in 1755. This book was a monumental work aimed at providing a
systematic and detailed description of the English language as it existed at the time.
Johnson's dictionary contains more than 40,000 entries as well as definitions, examples, and
etymological information. It was not the first English dictionary, as there had been smaller and
less complete dictionaries before it, but it was the first to gain widespread recognition and
popularity because of its scope and thoroughness. Johnson's dictionary played an important
role in standardizing the use of the English language and served as a reference for writers and
scholars of the time. His work laid the foundation for the development of modern English
dictionaries, and his influence can still be felt in lexicography today.
5 How many words are there in the English language?
Because English is a language that is constantly evolving and expanding, it is difficult to
accurately determine word counts. English is famous for its extensive and adaptable
vocabulary. While new words appear regularly, some older words may not be in common use.
Estimates of the number of words in the English language vary widely. English dictionaries
such as the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and Merriam-Webster contain hundreds of
thousands of words, including words from various dialects, regional variations, technical
jargons, and slangs.
At the end of training in September 2021, there were over 600,000 words in the Oxford
English Dictionary. However, it is important to understand that this number is not fixed and that
the English language continues to evolve with new words being added over time.
It is therefore difficult to calculate exactly how many words exist in the English language at
any given time, and this number will continue to change as the language develops and adapts
to new situations and events.
