, Hoofdstuk 5 – Disorders of Early Childhood
Developmental tasks and challenges related to physiological functioning, temperament and
attachment
- Physiological functioning
o Three behavioural shifts
Two to three months: after infants and caregivers have negotiated the
transition from intrauterine to extrauterine experience via rhythmic routines
of feeding, dressing, and comforting
Seven to nine months: most babies communicate their feelings and
intentions through gestures and vocalizations, play with toys, and have a
number of daily and nightly schedules
Eighteen to twenty months: toddlers are walking and talking and are
increasingly independent explorers of their many environments
o Sleep-wake system undergoes dramatic change in the first months of life
Sleep quality
Amount of sleep
Timing of sleep
- Temperament = temperament traits are early-emerging basic dispositions in the domains of
activity, affectivity, attention and self-regulation and these dispositions are the product of
complex interactions among genetic, biological and environmental factors across time
o Reactivity = the infant’s excitability and responsiveness
o Regulation = what infants do to control their reactivity
o Combined influence of genetics, physiology, and the maturation and increasing
coordination of physiological and psychological systems
Surgency = sociability and positive emotionality
Negative affectivity = predispositions to experience fear and
frustration/anger
Effortful control = attempts to regulate stimulation and response
o Typological/categorical approach versus dimensional approach
o Current and later adaptation/difficulties
o Dynamic biology-environment interplay
Warmth = connected to the child’s needs for affection, soothing, protection,
belonging, learning, efficacy
Positive and negative control = connected to the child’s needs for autonomy
and self-regulation
Goodness of fit = interplay between infant temperament and parenting
Differential susceptibility = infants and toddlers with risky temperaments are
both more likely to be negatively affected by problematic parenting and
other adverse external contexts and to be positively impacted by responsive
parenting and positive external contexts
Temperamental consistency = temperamental variations across situations
Temperamental stability = temperamental variations across time
- Attachment
o Attachment relationships = the degree to which infants experience safety, comfort
and affection
