DEVELOPMENT OF THE SELF IN SOCIETY: PERSONAL LIFE GOALS
GOALS @IMPAQ JUN 2019
Short term goals, Medium term goals, Long term goals
Why it is important to set down a goal and illustrate how perseverance and
prioritising can help you to achieve your goals.
→ Goal setting enables you to focus on your idea
→ Goal setting acts as a visual reminder of what you wish to receive/achieve
→ Goal setting helps you to identify your priorities
SMART technique
The SMART goal-setting technique is the most popular tool for setting goals.
The meaning of ‘abuse’: Misuse/mishandling/taking advantage
Why teenagers are more vulnerable to abuse in relationships
→ Teenagers place importance on media which may encourage negative or
bad values in relationships by portraying abusive relationships as ‘passionate’
relationships
→ Some teenagers may not be aware of who
they are/have low self-esteems which
make them more vulnerable to being
pressurised or taken advantage of.
→ Some teenagers depend so much on
technology which makes it easier for them
as partners to verbally/emotionally abuse
each other without having to face each
other.
The effects of an abusive relationship on the well-being of a teenager.
→ They could feel anxious as they never know what to expect in the relationship
or when the next abuse may occur.
→ Their school work may suffer as they are depressed or always focussed on the
abuse.
→ They develop low self-confidence when the person continually makes them
feel guilty or worthless.
→ They could become depressed as they might be made to feel unimportant
and in a hopeless situation.
→ Their relationships with friends/family may suffer because of the conflict within
the abusive relationship
→ They may develop sleeping/eating problems because of the stress due to the
abusive relationship.
The importance of maintaining individuality in relationships.
@Juffrou_Ansie
, 7
→ By being assertive you maintain your individuality, you set boundaries and
lessen the chance of being taken advantage of.
→ By expressing your own values and beliefs, you maintain your individuality.
You will gain respect and lessen the possibility of being taken advantage of.
→ Spending time on your own interests and being in control of your own life
could prevent someone from exerting their choices and power over your life.
→ Maintaining your relationships with others will ensure constant support from
outside the abusive relationship.
What does 16 Days of Activism mean when women are still dying? November 25
(2020) is the start of what is known as 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based
Violence. It is an international campaign, starting on the International Day for the
Elimination of Violence against Women. But what does this day mean for women
across the world?
Despite focused attention on gender-based violence (GBV) and many
declarations signed by various governments, women still experience violence in
their lives. The Covid-19 pandemic made the situation worse for women.
Organisations such as Rise Up Against Gender Based Violence could not cope
with the number of calls from women who needed to be evacuated from their
homes to places of safety.
Many had to leave their belongings behind and faced being outside of their
communities and places of employment, so while they were removed from
immediate harm, they still suffered much emotional and psychological trauma.
(Adapted extract: Mail & Guardian Online. (2020). Gender-Based Violence. Available: https://mg.co.za/specialreports/2020-12-
04-gender-based-violence/. Last accessed 20210413.)
This type of GBV was especially bad during the COVID-19 lockdown
Domestic violence. Women were confined in their homes with the abuser and could
not protect themselves.
@Juffrou_Ansie
, 8
The trauma that is associated with GBV
Physical – trouble sleeping and eating; Emotional and psychological – depression;
Low self-esteem etc.
The impact of 16 Days campaign to women and children in South Africa.
↘ The campaign has helped to raise awareness
among men, who are critical to helping end
the violence
↘ The campaign has helped to raise funds for
organisations aiding and supporting the
victims of violence
↘ Challenge cultures and practices that
perpetuate gender inequalities and
consequent abuse of women and children at personal and societal level
↘ It also encourages communities to play their part by rejecting and reporting
abusers
↘ People to be sensitive and supportive to GBV victims share helpful information
and support causes near you
“traditional gender roles in South Africa is like patriarchy.”
Traditional gender roles: Men have more power which leads to unequal power
relations
Patriarchy: A system of society in which men hold the power and women are largely
excluded from it.
Reasons why abused women stay with their partners.
↘ Some victims blame themselves for the violence. Other victims are ashamed
and feel rejected by the community.
↘ Most victims are afraid to leave the relationship because they cannot afford
to give their children shelter, food and clothing. Therefore they often
withdraw the criminal charges.
↘ During this phase, the victim often believes the abuser’s apologies and
promises to change and convinces herself that the abuser will not abuse her
again. In most cases, the pattern occurs again
