NFHS Softball 2024/2025 Rules
Pitch touches batter - ANSImmediate dead ball. Batter to 1B if not required to avoid pitch.
Runners advance if forced. If batter swings it is a strike. If batters leans into pitch and in strike
zone it is a strike. If pitch was in box but avoidable and batter makes no attempt to move, it is a
ball.
Illegally batted ball - ANSBat ball with foot on plate or outside of box completely. Immediate
dead ball. Batter is out. Runners return.
Ball hit twice - ANSImmediate dead ball. If over fair territory batter is out. If in box, foul ball.
Runners return.
Uncaught foul fly - ANSImmediate dead ball. Runners return.
Spectator interference - ANSImmediate dead ball. Out or bases awarded by umpire judgment to
nullify interference.
Interference by runner - ANSImmediate dead ball. Interferer is out. Batter-runner gets 1B.
Runners return to base attained at time of interference. Umpire can award DP if they believe
interference stopped possible DP.
Interference by retired runner - ANSImmediate dead ball. Runner closest to home is out. Other
runners return.
Interference by runner (foul fly) - ANSImmediate dead ball. Interferer is out. Other runners
return. Foul ball on batter.
Interference by coach or other team personnel (thrown ball) - ANSImmediate dead ball. By
coach - runner is out. By others - runner closest to home is out. Other runners return to last
base touched at time of interference.
Interference by coach or other team personnel (batted ball) - ANSImmediate dead ball. Batter is
out and if interference prevented possible double play, runner closest to home is out. Other
runners return to last base touched at time of interference.
Fair ball over fence or prevented by spectator or player detached equipment - ANSImmediate
dead ball. Award all bases to batter.
Fair ball touches spectator - ANSImmediate dead ball. Award all runners appropriate bases they
would have attained base don umpire judgment.
