P2: Describe the roles of judges, lawyers and lay
people in criminal trials in England and Wales.

I’m going to describe the roles of judges, lawyers, lay people in the
Crown Court and Magistrates Court as they are the criminal courts in
the England and Wales so I’m going to describe how much they get
paid, what they need to become that role, how are they selected
and so on.
Firstly, the term lay people means ordinary people who are not
qualified in the legal system so in this case it means the jury as they
are just ordinary people who are picked at random to come and
judge a trail/case even if they do not have any qualifications in the
law area.

Judge:
The role of a judge in a criminal trial is to look over cases that are
brought to them in the court and also if any arguments take place
within the court the judge’s role is to stop it and control the situation
and deal with it as quickly as possible also it is their role to look at
evidence that is presented to them as well both by the defence and
the prosecutor.
Their role is to also give support and guidance to the jury and help
them to understand what they need to do and their responsibilities
as that is really important because at the end of the day they will be
deciding if the defendant is guilty or not guilty.
Furthermore, their role is to also decide the sentence to give to
anyone who is found guilty within the court and if they do not have a
lawyer because they can’t aford one then the judge must give them
one.

The qualifications you need to become a judge is you must have a
relevant legal qualification for 5 years and this is an undergraduate
LLB, a Graduate diploma in law and then followed by the Legal
Practice Course or the Bar Training Couse.

How judges are chosen/selected is that they have to be appointed
by the Judicial Appointments Commission this is firm that
recommends candidates to for judicial ofce.
And the training you can do is shadow a judge which basically
means what is says in the name and this will give both training and
experience in to becoming a judge.

Judges can get removed for any number of reason and those can be
for being racist, sexist, homophobic, bias and if the persons
complaint about the judge bring it forward to a higher authority then
