IB SEHS HL - Topic 9 – Fatigue Already Graded A+ Fatigue in sport ️A reversible exercise-indulged decline in performance Peripheral fatigue ️Develops rapidly and is caused by reduced muscle cell force Central (mental) fatigue ️develops during prolonged exercise and is caused by impaired function of the central nervous system (CNS) High-intensity exercise ️lasts for less than a second, or as long as 1-2 minutes. E.g - interval training, plyometrics. Derived from anaerobic processes Endurance acrtivities ️involve prolonged sessions of low-intensity activity that may last from several minutes to several hours. E.g - cycling, jogging. Derived from aerobic processes How is fatigue perceived? ️It may depend on multiple factors; age, fitness, and the specific level of exercise carried out The development of peripheral fatigue in HIGH INTENSITY ACTIVITIES depends on the rate of: ️ depletion of energy sources (creatine phosphate and ATP) -increase in levels of products of exercise such as lactate and hydrogen ions The development of peripheral fatigue in ENDURANCE ACTIVITIES depends on the rate of: ️-depletion of muscle and liver glycogen reserves -reduction in Ca2+ (calcium) release -depletion of acetylcholine -dehydration -electrolyte loss -overheating Rate of recovery ️This can occur at different rates. It also depends on the type of activity (high intensity, team sports or endurance) What does EPOC stand for? ️Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption What is EPOC? ️- restoration of muscle creatine phosphate stores
